Maria Ho was born on March 6, 1983, in Taipei, the capital of the unrecognized Republic of Taiwan. Four years later, her family moved to the United States and settled in the small town of Arcadia near Los Angeles, one of the capitals of American live poker. Her parents managed to build a successful business from scratch in their new place and were able to give their daughter a good education. In 2005, she received a degree from the University of California, majoring in Communications.

Maria Ho has a younger sister, Judy, a well-known neuropsychologist in the USA, a motivational speaker, and the author of several books on psychology. She regularly participates in popular TV shows as an expert and writes articles for Psychology Today, Teen Vogue, and other magazines.

At this stage, Maria did not plan to start a career as a professional player and expected to continue the family business of selling real estate. But the first major achievements and serious prizes made her change her mind and focus on poker.
